The 2016-2017 winter in Oregon was tough. A lot of people had to abandon their vehicles on the side of the road. Oregon was pretty much brought to a standstill because of the cold weather and the amount of snow the area received. Broad sheets of ice lined the roads and it was a tough time for a lot of people. The first part of the storm might have been the most surprising because the snow came quickly and it blanketed cities very quickly. People who were driving on the highways found themselves driving on slick roads that were relatively safe only minutes before they started driving.
In fact, if you were stopped at a turn light then you might have had the phenomenon where you could drive safely without chains only to need them just 4-8 minutes later. Many people saw the issues coming but could not do anything because you have to follow the rules of the road. The roads quickly became slick and there was nothing a motorist could do other than being wary of the potential hazard or hazards that the slickness of the street would bring. If you have driven anywhere the near the edge of Gresham into Boring/Sandy, Oregon then you know how steep and hilly that area is to drive. It is the last place you want to get stuck or to have to drive when the roads are slick but many people were forced to do so and had a hard time navigating the problem areas.

Of course, the answer to the problem is traction devices. The problem with that thought is that the roads were completely fine before the snow came. The snow did not just come for a little dusting. The snow came with full force and quickly made the conditions very bad. It is illegal to have chains or cables on when the conditions are not bad, therefore, people would have had to pull off to the side of the road to put them on quickly. A person would have also needed to have the chains on their person for this to work as well. Most people do not have time to get their chains or cables ready before work because most people are rushing out there door. A two-fold problem existed for most drivers that day. One or both these problems existed for most people trying to drive those streets in Gresham, OR.
