The Saturn Corporation was a trademark used by GM. It was created on Jan. 7, 1985. GM had noticed the sales of imported cars in the US and opened Saturn to compete in the marketplace. The moniker for the company was that they were a "different kind of car company". They were known for a commercial in which Saturn owners were invited to a picnic for no other reason than that they owned a Saturn. The company, itself, tried to be as independent as possible from GM including having its own assembly plant in Tennessee, unique models of cars, and maintaining a different network of retailers.
Unfortunately, GM stopped the line of cars on October 31, 2010. Penske Automotive decided not to acquire the brand from GM and GM made the hard decision to end the brand name. The actual production of the cars had stopped much earlier around October 7, 2009.
